Holy Cross, Sunderland

Holy Cross has been part of the local community in Sunderland for over 150 years, becoming part of St Cuthbert’s Care in 2012. Set in attractive, landscaped grounds, our home can accommodate 56 residents. Our rooms are tastefully decorated with en-suite facilities. We encourage our residents to bring their own belongings to create a home from home feel.

Mass is celebrated regularly in our beautiful, spacious St Jeanne Jugan chapel, a special feature of Holy Cross that is integral to the home and particularly valued by our residents.

We are rated CQC ‘Good’ and our staff pride themselves on going the extra mile to ensure the wellbeing of our residents.

For the comfort and convenience of our Holy Cross residents, there is a small on-site shop and hairdressing salon where our visiting hairdresser provides weekly appointments. Free Wi-Fi and supported Skype sessions are also available to our residents.

Emma Parkin
Home Manager

Emma Parkin is the Registered Manager at Holy Cross and has been working with elderly people since 2009. Starting work as a housekeeper she began working and studying simultaneously, gaining qualifications and experience to be a Carer by the time St Cuthbert’s Care took ownership of Holy Cross in 2012.

Emma’s vocation and passion inspired her to continue with further training and educational opportunities, supported by St Cuthbert’s Care, culminating with a Degree in Dementia Care from Sterling University. Her empathy, enthusiasm and dedication was recognised with positions of increasingly more responsibility, the most recent being, to that of Registered Manager in 2023. Her vast experience in all sectors of elderly care is an asset to the charity.

“I love my job! it’s why I have been here for so many years!

Seeing the residents smile, being happy and enjoying their life as far as possible and making sure THEIR home is safe, secure and clean for them to live in, knowing I have facilitated that, is the best feeling in the world!

My favourite part of the day is the start, when I go to see the residents, say ‘Hello’ and see what they are up to; watching them take part in activities, having some 1:1 time with their families, just relaxing with a book or some music and seeing their smiles. It’s what I am there for.

Alongside our wonderful residents, what makes a good nursing home is a strong staff team and I am so proud of them all. They are caring and compassionate, with empathy and experience, sharing the same desire to ensure the residents are well cared for and looked after.

Holy Cross is a very happy place and I would not wish to work anywhere else.”
